What it is
Trans-jugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt connects the portal and hepatic venous systems inside the liver, dropping portal pressure. Used for recurrent variceal bleeding or refractory ascites.

- Variceal bleeding (blood in vomit or stool)
- Uncontrolled ascites

Diagnosis
Endoscopy, cross-sectional imaging, hepatology assessment.

Treatment
TIPS placement — a covered stent inside the liver, connecting portal to hepatic vein. Coordinated closely with hepatology.
