What it is
Varicose veins arise from incompetent valves in the great or small saphenous veins. Modern treatment is endovenous — a catheter and heat, day-case, walk-in walk-out.

- Aching, heaviness, night cramps
- Skin discolouration around ankles
- Bleeding varicosity, ulceration in severe cases

Venous duplex ultrasound.

Treatment
Endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation of the incompetent trunk; ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy for tributaries; phlebectomy for cosmetic clean-up.
