— 01
What it is
An inferior vena cava filter catches large clots travelling from the legs before they reach the lungs. Modern practice: retrievable filters, placed for a defined indication and removed on schedule.
— 02
Symptoms & signs
- None from the filter itself
— 03
Diagnosis
Indication-driven — recent DVT with contraindication to anticoagulation, for example.
— 04
Treatment
Percutaneous jugular placement and, importantly, timely retrieval when the indication resolves.
