What it is

Renal artery narrowing can cause treatment-resistant hypertension or worsening kidney function. Only a subset benefits from intervention — case selection matters.

Symptoms & signs

  • Blood pressure uncontrolled despite three drugs
  • Rising creatinine after ACE inhibitor start

Diagnosis

Duplex ultrasound, CT/MR angiography, occasionally captopril renogram.

Treatment

Balloon angioplasty ± stenting for anatomically and clinically appropriate cases (fibromuscular dysplasia, selected atherosclerotic lesions).
