What it is
Significant carotid disease raises stroke risk. Carotid endarterectomy (open surgery) remains a mainstay; carotid stenting is chosen for specific anatomies and comorbidities.
— 02
Symptoms & signs
- Prior TIA (mini-stroke) or stroke
- Amaurosis fugax (transient monocular vision loss)
— 03
Diagnosis
Duplex ultrasound, CTA or MRA.
— 04
Treatment
Stenting with an embolic protection device, or referral to vascular surgery for endarterectomy — decision is multi-disciplinary.
