What it is

PAD is atherosclerosis of the leg arteries. It ranges from cramping on walking (claudication) to rest pain and ulceration (critical limb ischaemia).

— 02

Symptoms & signs

  • Calf or thigh cramp on walking, relieved by rest
  • Cold, pale, or discoloured foot
  • Non-healing foot wound
  • Rest pain, especially at night
— 03

Diagnosis

Ankle-brachial index (ABI), Doppler ultrasound, CT or MR angiography.

— 04

Treatment

Risk-factor control and supervised exercise for claudication. For lifestyle-limiting or limb-threatening disease: angioplasty ± stenting, atherectomy, or bypass surgery when endovascular is not appropriate.
