What it is

Life-threatening or recurrent haemoptysis often arises from the bronchial arteries. Embolisation is the first-line intervention and can be lifesaving.

  • Coughing blood, especially in volume
  • Recurrent smaller episodes

Diagnosis

CT thorax with contrast, bronchoscopy.

Treatment

Selective bronchial artery embolisation with particles. Recurrence is possible; repeat embolisation is straightforward.
